On Byline Times: The sad irony that coronvaris could force the closure of the UK’s leading smallpox immunologist’s museum

Today Oxford University’s Jenner Institute – named after smallpox vaccination pioneer Edward Jenner – is receiving millions of pounds to find and develop a vaccine to cure covid-19.

Yet at the same time the small charity running Edward Jenner’s home and museum has been so badly hit by the lock down that it is facing permanent closure – all for the sake of a few thousands pounds. And the World Health Organisation celebrated the 40th anniversary of the eradication of the disease this weekend – nearly 200 years after Edward Jenner worked out a vaccine.

Full story on Byline Times. The charity also has a crowdfunder here if you want to contribute.

  1. This is in my village!!

It is the bitterest irony that funding to retain and augment this museum to Edward Jenner, whose work is now being called upon to secure an anti Covid vaccine.

Father of Immunology passed-by in his own Country. Should have a belated Nobel prize for science and a monumental input into recording his work and publicising it worldwide-as a World Heritage site for the Vaccinarium – thatched cottage in the garden.

      • David I sent an article from our local Berkeley Flyer where the current Manger, Owen Gower (Arthurian sounding name!) has written a large article. I also forwarded your article to an active supporter and Tory Councillor Gordon Craig suggesting World Heritage status application and belated/honorary Nobel to be sought. In fact I might send it to the Nobel committee direct if I can find their details-thank goodness for the www!
        Thanks for raising this now!!
