In July well before the publication of the decision of the judicial review Boris Johnson during the Tory leadership campaign was quoted by Dan Bloom in the Mirror of promising some sort of support for 50swomen who had to wait up to six years for their pension. The quote reproduced by the BackTo60 campaign in the picture below raised hopes that the present government might soften its attitude and offer something.
Now just after the publication of the judicial review decision he has changed his mind. Writing to a constituent in Uxbridge and South Ruislip who wishes to remain anonymous he has completely backtracked and also got some of the facts wrong into the bargain.
In a letter to her he now is promising nothing.
” Making further transitional arrangements would not only complicate the system but could also cost the taxpayers many billions of pounds and the potential cost of reversing the 2011 changes has been estimated at £39 billion.”
He then goes on to state that people affected by the 2011 change had all been told between January 2011 and November 2013. And further claims that those affected by the 1995 Pensions Act which raised the pension age were all told between April 2009 and March 2011.
The latter is a major gaffe since even I, as a severe critic of successive governments handling of the issue, would concede that some people were told before 2009. It also is an admission that the whole purpose of introducing the change in 1995 so people had notice was a failure – as April 2009 is just one year before the changes started to take effect. What a monumental own goal.
He also seems to confuse the role of the £1.1 billion concession in 2011 to delay the effect of further changes to the additional rise of the pension age to 66.
He seems to think this was a godsend for women claiming that he was pleased that it mitigated their position. In fact it only delayed the rise and also helped men who started to be affected after 2018.
Finally he talks of the ” sharp increases ” in longevity making the system, unsustainable. Well these cease in 2011 and have flat lined – even falling in the poorer areas such as Blackpool, north of Glasgow and in North Wales.
I can only hope that the PM has a proper understanding of the current negotiations going on over Brexit – because if this is an example of his grasp of facts – they are going to get in a real mess this week.
It also means – if this is now the PM’s view – that Carolyn Harris, Labour MP for Swansea East and Tim Loughton, Conservative MP for Worthing East and Shoreham, are wasting their time seeing Therese Coffey, the new works and pensions secretary to discuss any concessions for the 50s women on behalf of the all party group against pension inequality.
For the women themselves the one power they have left is their vote at a soon to be called general election. Unless they are happy to remain living in poverty voting for a new Conservative government is a waste of space.

Absolutely Disgusted to say the least, this man and his Minority Government are not to be trusted to put the bins out let alone Govern the Country. That said I will want to see what each Party aim to do to help us 50s women before I cast any vote, there are a lot of women affected who also have lots of family who have been affect too, so consequently a lot of votes to lose or gain. I feel sick to the stomach at just how many doors have been shut in our faces, but we are a force to be reckoned with having raised almost £51,000 towards the £72,000 needed for appeal in just a few days, so onwards and upwards ladies.

Where does he get his facts from! I NEVER received any notification of ANY changes to my pension. What a cop out and disagreeable man he is.
Well I definitely will not be voting conservative we need to vote for someone that is going to help us, 3.6 million of us can surely make a dent in their figures.
Let’s hope someone can make this happen for us 50s born women.

Where do they get this idea from that we all had letters informing us of the pension changes ,absolute rubbish I have never received any such letter !!! I’m now 64 and starting to feel the misery of not being able to retire and spend time with my husband ,who suffers ill health ,nobody gets my vote unless they. One up with a way of getting us out of this hole of poverty

like you, I also “DID NOT” receive any notifications for either of the mentioned years. Its not as they didn’t know where I lived either. 30yrs in same house, all censuses, tax purposes, ect, have all been filled in.

they isn’t a single politician you can rely on because they all back track on their promises which is why Brexit as become the FARCE that it as. we did not even get mentioned in the queens speech yesterday we are not cared about being born in the 50s in spite of most of us paying our way and working our back sides off since we were 15/16 years old and brought future tax/ nat ins payers into the the world .without asking for anything except for what we contributed to for nearly 50 years our Pensions this not only affects us now it also effects future generations I fear for there futures because they will end up in the same boat as us if things dont change and the pension system needs an over all to make it fair to everyone paying into it in their older years. I will be thinking very carefully who i vote for in the G ELECTION when it is called. We are being treated very badly and it is not acceptable we deserve so much better than being robbed and fed excuses for not paying us out when we all paid in……

Sadly the judicial review has given him the armoury to take a u turn, however, his u turn could cost him at the ballot box, if 3.8m women use their vote wisely the u turn could be irrelevant.
It must be the aim of all groups fighting for backdated pension payments to battle the JR decision ASAP but only if there is a chance of winning ?

This is so unfair. If they cut back on their ridiculous expenses and MP’s retired at the same age as the Public it would not only save money but allow the 1950’s women some compensation for lack of notice in the change to age 66. I was advised I Would receive pension at age 62 then it suddenly jumped to age 66 without enough notice to enable me to make up the shortfall. There is far too much money wasted on MP salaries/expenses/early retirement payments and the farce of Brexit. This should have been done and dusted in the initial timescale, I hate to think of the cost the delays have caused.

I have carried out research into how the government can calculate the cost of refunding our lost pensions. “Billions” has been quoted in various publications.
In fact, it is my view, formed as a result of my research, that it is not possible for the government to calculate any precise figure, and indeed even providing a true estimate would seem impossible. There are no records (that I can find) of how many females were born in the UK each year from 1950 to 1959 (which are the years I searched for) who would have been alive an eligible for the state pension, had the retirement age stayed at 60.
I would dearly love to know how these figures being bandied around have been calculated? Can anyone help?

We the 3.8 million 1950’s women need to vote to get the lying scheming evel man out and we may have a chance as I certainly didn’t receive any notification and have 45 years full time contributions I’m 61 and have a few serious illnesses whereupon I’ve only been given about 4-6 years to live. I live on my own in a private rental bungalow as can’t manage stairs and I have to work full time as no private pension and PIP say I’m fit to work. I have a good job with company car etc so someone younger would greatly benefit from my job and all I need to live on is my state pension no other benefits and I’ve never claimed dole or SSP I’m my life sad times ☹️

I have no faith in a two faced PM, he has lied about notice we got mine was no notice at all,and he knows this so he is a bare faced liar not to be trusted to be a PM of this nation…listen to his speech after the queens speech on YouTube,never once did he mention the older generation in what he was going to do in our nation,neither did the queen,we dont get a mention because we are left on the scrap heap after a certain age,shame on then all for this to see the pensioners suffering,Google how many pensioners die in this country every year because of being cold and cannot afford heating it is shocking to say the least,this is the conservatives for you,no conscience, no empathy,no heart ,but they will have heating and food on their table,greedy fat cats lining their pockets at the expense of the poor,as a Christian I know one day they will answer to God Almighty for this so I rest my case,I would advise them as leaders of our nation to humble themselves to God and repent of their wicked ways,and turn from their hard heartedness and do what is right in the sight of God ,chin up ladies and keep it up always,we know who has robbed us and they will carry that label all their lives…thieves and robbers of old people and of families on uc who dont have enough to feed their children ..discusting to say the least…get them out…

So he feels that it’s ok to let someone know about a major change just 4 years before they were expecting to retire. I’ve worked and paid full contributions since I was 16, I’m now 64 (soon to be 65) with multiple health issues and still having to work, it’s so unfair

After we lost our JR I wouldn’t have expected any other comments than the one Boris has given. He is now in the position to make the statements as the court’s judgement went in their favour not ours.
When he moved into power he offered to look into our situation. At that stage the Government thought we had a damned good chance of winning the JR. He thought he would make it look like he’d come to our rescue to get our votes in an election.
We were all taken back by the judgement of the JR as the judges did not take into consideration any of the evidence. If I was a betting person I would of put money on us winning the JR because the in justice was clear. However the outcome was a bit like the elections in the US where you went off to bed with Hilary Clinton way ahead and got up to find Trump had won.
Sometimes things are not what they appear and hidden factors move things in strange directions. Cynical I may be but lies and deciept through out life make you that way.
It saddens me to say we have a government with no morals, no humanity and the inability to tell the truth. Who can only blame ourselves, as we elect these idiots.
Were not far off our target to appeal but this time we must come from a different direction. David Hencke clearly showed the theft of pension funds and that is why the government needed to increase retirement age, not living longer cos this isn’t living!!.
Regarding the DWP didn’t have to inform us about pension changes and Boris statement we were all told is the biggest lie of all.
The government acts as if it can do what it wants when it wants. It’s answerable to no one, it can mess up all manner of things costing millions and no one can challenge it.
This cannot go on and only the people of this country can do something about it. Elections are weeks away and they will all suffer for their injustices.
I’m sick to death of hearing sympathy for the 50’s women by various parties. One of you grow a set and do something constructive, admirable and honest and sort out the travesty that’s been done to us.
We don’t want sympathy we want action.

The powers that be are set against changing the retirement ages and know that to concede to women, will open the flood gates to men. We need a change in political thinking. Different judiciary too if they have to get involved in politics, which is debatable.
My own MP has written me a letter with similar wording so I imagine they cut and paste and Boris Johnson has not even seen this letter. He is busy with Brexit.

The only chink of light was that he personally was against the 2011 Act but implies the Court judgement means nothing will be done by the Conservative Party. He is a Tory.
In Poland, a Govt gained power on the back of a manifesto pledge to lower the retirement ages for all and to reform welfare.

I couldn’t agree with you more Dee you are spot on. the bunch of idiots in parliament that think they can do what they want when they want! forget who it is that put them there and we can all remove them again at the next G Election they should start listening to us as I am sure 3.4 million women voting against them will make an impact on there lieing robbing conieving cheating plans. the 5th richest country in the world and yet it pays out the lowest pensions in the world and nobody should have to work longer than they are able too it should be through choice not force it should never have become a birthday lottery that is not EQUALITY basing it on DOB. when some end up working and paying in longer than others. A lot of thought is going into who I vote for if i even bother the way i am feeling right now because they all make false promises and do nothing worthwhile to help us. Just take take and keep on taking as the 50s women and back to 60 are living proof of this. Its shameful and scandalous and needs sorting out ASAP.

I agree the DWP have made it far more unfair by our DOB lottery adding more months onto the 6 years just because of when we were born , paying into the system for longer and So losing more Pension , example My SPA is 6 years & 4 months born in July 56, so that takes me to November 2022 then you are paid a month in arrears so that will be December ! a total of £49,172.80 of lost pension ! So all our stolen pensions if you add them up come to near 180 Billion 400 million pounds , so how can they say , it costs too much to put right !! All the MPs think we only lose 18 months , as we know from the DWP Guide to 50’s SPA only up to April 1953 it is 18 months after that 5/6 years and then the added months on top , it’s a total unfair system on top of our Injustice, this also needs to be looked into , because for sure the Government & the DWP do not know , what the other are doing, Why didn’t the DWP keep it at 18 months for everyone? The escalated scale is not a gradual increase, it’s a total unfair shambles , we feel victimised and persecuted and we are not giving up , too much to lose , we’ve work hard juggling all our working lives , paying in since 15, to have it stolen and not informed, we just want our hard earned pensions that are rightfully ours . I checked online at the DWP in 2015 a year before I was due to retire & I was informed that I had well over the amount of contributions & yes I was entitled to a full state pension, no mention of waiting over 6 years , only when I tried to retire in 2016 I was told I would have to wait till 2022 , I was so shocked, upset & angry , planning to retire with my terminally ill husband, to spend what time we have left , not worrying about money, when will this nightmare end !

I agree with all of that Dee, but the biggest question I would like an answer to is this – Its our taxation that gives us a government, so how can any government not be answerable to the taxpayer. If that’s the case then they can up PAYE, up NI up VAT and not even disclose it and no one would know until they came to receive their pay, or see the rise in prices in the shops. In fact they could up PAYE and drop capital gains on their friends business’s. If we go down this route of unanswerable to the taxpayer we are moving towards the capability of corruption in massive amounts, imagine getting someone in power like the Marcos’s, we’d all be had it. Even if its not written down its a moral obligation to inform the people that the money they pay in is being used in various ways. When we have something as big as pensions it has to be said that the entitlement to be informed comes from the very fact that you pay in personally to ensure that pensions are paid to everyone entitled to one, whether or not they have contributed, and that’s the issue, its not a benefit, its a contribution to a scheme to ensure that all current pensioners get a pension. Everyone has lost sight of it not being a benefit because this government has loudly shouted that it is a benefit and made out its not a scheme to get others on side, its very easy to word things in such a way to make people like pensioners, the disabled, or single parents be treated as scroungers, or in our case we often see comments like ‘you wanted equal rights, now you’ve got it and you’re still moaning’, this is because people are being led down a path of purposeful misunderstanding. We need to make everyone understand they are next, if this stands in law, they will lose their right to a pension at 60/65/66 and it will go up to 75 without a word being said just as it happened to us. Not forgetting this had handed the private sector pension companies a massive chance to do the same to their clients. And it will go on and on and on taking, but never giving back.

Well I don’t know what to say or think after reading BJ letter re: 50s pension campaign. Firstly I would like to say a big Thankyou to the ladies you are fighting on our behalf.
Iam almost 63 working full time because I have too now and can honestly say That to think I have to wait another 3 years before getting my pension fills me with dread. I like many other women have worked since the age 15 paid over 35 years NI contributions now to top it all as I am a widow of 3 years my husbands pension obviously I cannot claim part of either.
However more concerning as a sole trader worked all his life with many ups downs on the way only to take his own life , I have now been told I am entitled to 7p a week yes 7p week from my late husbands pension but cannot have it until I am 66. !!!!!!
As for apprenticeships for the older women get real for goodness sake . I don’t want to retrain , I want to have the right to decide what I want do now and when. To retirement enjoy my lata years with my family supporting them would be nice , However , that choice has been taken away from me
So BJ Thankyou for your suppose support. NOT !!!!! To conclude this is certainly changing my mind about who to vote for in the next election . Spend my added 6 years pension wisely MrJ which has been stolen from me I worked very hard for it .

I’m sorry but Boris Johnston is a disgrace to be PM he has no idea the effects this had had on the women and Thier family’s he takes rash decisions makes promises he can’t keep and talks about the money it would costs when he has the cheek and audacity to spend money how he likes on everything that doesn’t matter and not on the things that matter most like homelessness, the old , and disadvantaged people of our society it’s our country we are responsible for future generations to come not the government without us there wouldn’t be any future so it’s time the P M and the government listened to the people what we want for our future generations why should the P M and the government be given the right to speak for us we as individuals have a human right to speak and be heard all us 3.8 women and Thier family’s need to vote out the Tory’s in the pending General election and show them we matter we have a voice and we are going to be heard

Just read all the comments on BJ’s letter and totally agree with all of them. I have always supported tories but very doubtful they will get my vote again!! When they are campaigning for next gen election & hopefully knock my door I will certainly let them know my views & remind them that 3.8 million women feel the same way!!
It infuriates me that our pension fund was looted but now we are being brushed aside and I am having to wait another 6 years to receive what was rightfully mine at age 60! My husband will be 73 before I get a penny of my pension so thankyou Boris for ruining my retirement along with 3.8 million other women who have paid into the fund but are now being robbed of the enjoyment of treating our grandchildren & ourselves in our latter years, just because politicians were incapable of managing our pension fund properly! Instead they’ve caused anxiety and distress in place of doing the right & moral thing.

We all living longer are we ? Not only has the rise in living flat linned but for many a long life was never on the cards. I am 65 on Monday my sister died at 63 some years ago.My partner who is also 65 has one sister dead before 60 and 2 brothers dead just gone 60. Those with comfortable life may expect longer life but for many of us we doing very well get to 65.That 3 sibling who never lived long enough claim one penny of State Pension and one sibling who got 3 years SP before death….she would not have got one penny now she be 3 years off SP age. The whole thing is just another attack on working people. I saw to the likes if Anne Widercombe you had a privilege life and can look forward to a long one you were entitled to your state pension at 60 and enjoy a very generous MP pension in addition…..shame on you for celebrating the dismissal of the 1950s womens judicial review

I’m not in the least surprised that his letter contradicts the promises he made to ‘1950’s women just several weeks ago, it’s just yet another reason why only 40% of people in the UK believe they can trust Boris Johnson ?
Even before Boris’ change of mind’ I had grave doubts that the meeting on behalf of the all party group against pension inequality with Therese Coffey, the newly appointed Works & Pensions Minister ever had much hope of achieving any concessions for 1950’s women whatsoever.
David’s article on Coffey’s appointment in The Bylinetimes (10/9/1919) revealed that: “Her voting record reveals a tranche of reactionary views, likely to be offensive to the gay community, women, pensioners and non-smokers. She would also like millions of Europeans who live in the UK to have no right to stay here”.
Given her hardline, right wing views on welfare & equality issues I think the chances of her being sympathetic to our plight is …nil to zero.
We are led to believe the Labour Party are more sympathetic to our claim & have made various pledges of support over the past few years and a recent promise to further consult with 1950s women on the issue – but so far as I can tell these remain just vague maybes. Surely the background & issues of the ‘Back to 60 Campaign’ are by now abundantly clear, what more do the Labour Party expect to learn through further consultation with us?
I believe it’s time the Labour Party put their cards on the table & presented us with firm proposals detailing how they propose to support us?

This is a big disappointment for the women involved, and it shows that Boris cannot be trusted. Let’s hope he’s grasped the problems of Brexit properly.
It is true that these women will soon be able to show their dissatisfaction when they have a chance to vote in the next General Election.
However, as much as I can understand the dissatisfaction of these women ( my own wife being one of these) let’s not forget that any anti-Conservative voting could allow Corbyn to become the next Prime Minister. This would be a disaster for the whole country. Corbyn is not fit to lead the country. His only interest is in becoming the next Prime Minister. He does not care for this country or anything else, and he is incapable of making any decisions. He sits on the fence the whole time, not risking upsetting anyone.
So just remember this at voting time. These “Back to 60s” women have had a raw deal, but don’t make it worse, because if Corbyn becomes the next Prime Minister, nobody will be better off.

This once again proves Boris Johnson is a lair I have worked for over 51 years paid tax and insurance my contract with this country is if I paid national insurance at full rate for the required years I would receive my pension at 60 at no point was I advised that this had been altered it’s a disgrace and we have been robbed with no way to address this imbalance

Labour have already promised a two year reduction but are supposed to be looking at a better offer, so we need to know what the hell is going on.

I personally definitely didn’t receive any notification but am sure copies of the mentioned notifications must be on file somewhere. Please forward a copy to prove that I am incorrect !

I didn’t receive any notification either from DWP. But out of curiosity I wrote to them requesting a copy of the letter they state categorically they sent to 1950’s women. They told me they don’t keep copies!

I had no notice either ….I heard from. A friend 2 months before my 60th,I was going to go part time when I got my pension because the pension was not enough to live on,i also wanted time with my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren,that was taken away from me .

Worked from 15 years paid 39 yrs ins stamps can’t work now due to depression and having to live off my savings which won’t last me till 66. Feeling deprived as well as depressed

Can you believe this, I have had two email in as many days from Boris Johnson. I have never voted for the lousy party and never will, but knowing they have robbed all us 50s women of thousands of pounds and then backtracked on his promise to rectify this. I have now received this email asking me to donate to the Conservatives, I tried to reply on the email to give a piece of my mind but it is not a monitored email box. I am absolutely fuming, roll on the election is what I say.

I have recieved the same Email about 10 mins ago. the tory toff can sing and beg for a donation he is NOT getting one ever. he is not going to do anything for us 50s Ladies but keep ROBBING US. I am not donating my VOTE to them at the GE either which will be coming sooner than our so called pensions. Grrrrrrrr. 🤬

I’m sure millions of people have received an electronic Boris begging letter to amass funds for his election.
Just out of curiosity for a party so intellectually astute.
1. Where the hell do they think the 50’s women have money stashed away. Does he remember the extension of the state pension. Leaving women in their 60’s still having to work, find work, support elderly parents and look after grandchildren. Whilst their own health deteriorates by the minute.
2. Where the hell do the poor sods on benefits struggling with ill health having to go through all manner of degredation to beg for help.
3. Where the hell do families with everyone working, trying to keep a roof over their heads get spare cash to support you.
As you are clearly not of our world and live some fantasist life of adoration, denial and in humanity, your ego bigger than the planet. You should ask the elite followers you have put into highly paid positions, to put their hands in their very wealthy pockets Or ask your mate Donald to help out.
Your latest amazing Brexit deal you have negotiated has already been exposed as little different to the Theresa May deal just different words used to flower it up. Yet more deciept, lies and trickery.

Just been reading that the gov is going to make it tough on company’s to stop them abusing their pension schemes to protect workers. ARE they taking the Mickey!! When they have done the self same thing to 3.8 million 50s Ladies making us wait 6 yrs longer for our pensions and with very little notice of the changes. the gov needs to get it’s own house in order before it tackles others……

I am a woman born in the 50s, became a single parent when I was 25 and received no financial support from my ex-husband for my son’s upbringing. In the 1970s/80s there was no Child Support Agency to chase fathers for non-payment and no Working Tax Credit to claim to supplement my low income. I have worked all my life and successfully brought up my son alone and have always expected to receive my State Pension at 60. It is an utter farce to say that the DWP did not have to tell us about changes in our state pension age. I am only asking for what I am entitled to. Give 60s women a break and pay them their dues.

Should there be a general election, please include this on the labour election manifesto. After all in 2011 they were in power and allowed this injustice to happen. I am livid about this. As a cancer survivor I still have to work at the age of 61. I have been paying my contributions for 27 years. We are not asking the tax payers to pay us. We are simply claiming the money that is rightfully ours. We paid for it.

I am 66 in December 2019, I left school in December 1968 the day before my 15th birthday.
I gave up my full-time working life on the 7th December 2019 because of ill health, 4 months before I was due to be in receipt of my State pension.
At sixty it really sadden me to discover I would have to work for a further 5 years, I really struggled for the last year of my working life.
I have been robbed of approximately £48,000 pounds.
If someone had scammed me of my money they would be changed and go to jail.
Why should the government get away with stealing from 3.8 million 1950’s women.
Mr Johnson try doing the right thing just for once.
These changes to the state pension have sentenced me and 3.8 million women to a life of poverty in what is left of our future.
We paid in you pay out now!! Before it’s too late

The thing that makes me angry is the fact that I paid my national insurance contributions in full, based on the fact I was working full time for 39 years and had no children so no maternity benefits either! The government have taken my contributions and have led me into a false sense of security, letting me think that I would be granted a pension at 60. There are many woman who may have not even worked or contributed! Why can’t they look at my contributions please!

One Voice Back to 60 needs to strike with the 50’s women now.
There’s no greater time than before a general election to demand a commitment from all parties to resolve the theft of the 50’s women pension.
It’s time for action use your vote wisely and demand answers to your question, we paid in to the system, when will you pay out.
We need a straight answer and commitment.

We have worked so had all our life’s and struggled a lot of the way never letting our side of the deal down and putting enough stamps on to retire i can’t say in words how distressing the extra 6 yrs has had on us all and how cold and heartless the government have been ignoring us back to 60s woman

Boris Johnson is an down and out liar, even as late as yesterday he lied about the amount each person would save each year with his sprung announcement in NI payments. Stating each person would save something like £500 but in reality it turned out to be £85 why would you trust this man. The debate was a farce, but give Jeremy Corbyn his due, he stuck with what he was saying, he said and has for a long time, that would re negotiate a deal and put it back to the people with remain also on the paper. BJ was trying to ridicule him by forcing him to say which way he would personally vote and mocked him when he didn’t answer, he is a lying bully. I know JC has back tracked on when he would allow a second Scottish Referendum but he has always said they could have one, just not very clear about when and so he needs to be clearer on that, but he is not lying to us. I am awaiting the Labour Manifesto today and hopefully us 50s Women will be mentioned and then it is up to the voters amongst us.

Even if the government did inform us women born in the 1950s earlier, which they did not, it is still a gross and despicable injustice against our rights. We should be rightly and justifiably compensated. We are not of a generation that received equal pay in the workplace, men received a third in earnings more than their female colleagues doing the same job. So, therefore, what the government has done to us is criminal.
