Guy Opperman – the current pension minister who says it is too expensive to pay the 50s women.
CROSS POSTED ON BYLINE.COM
The fact that 50s women were robbed of their pensions by raising the pension age is undeniable. But the biggest argument against putting this right has been the cost – a fact perpetually used by the present pensions minister, Guy Oppenman, who quotes the £70 billion plus figure.
Recently I discovered that successive governments had taken a decision NOT to top up the fund as originally proposed by William Beveridge when the welfare state was set up in 1948.
What I did not know was how much money was lost. Now thanks to an extraordinary paper prepared for the National Pensioners Convention by a social security expert Tony Lynes, and still on the web, I now know. And it is staggering. You can read it here.
The paper written 12 years ago by a man I personally knew as a fount of all knowledge on the benefit system when I was social services correspondent on the Guardian. He sadly died, aged 85, in a car accident in 2014. There is an appreciation of him in The Guardian here.
His calculation from beyond the grave is that for every year that the government decided not to contribute to the fund it was deprived of £11.3 billion. As he says: “Restoring the supplement at its pre-1981 level would bring an extra £11.3 billion a year into the Fund, enough to meet the gross cost of a £109 per week basic pension.”
We now know that virtually no money was paid into the fund by the Treasury for around 24 years from 1990 to 2014. I calculate – and this will be a conservative estimate – because it doesn’t count the reduced contributions post 1981 – that an amazing £271 billion yes billion extra would have been in the fund.
This would pay more than three times over the money due to the women – and even allowed higher state pensions for everybody else now.
Why this didn’t happen is because politicians of all three major parties took a decision not to do this. They took the decision knowing that their Parliamentary and ministerial pension pot would mean they would be some of the wealthiest pensioners in the land when they came to retire. And the taxpayer would foot their bills.
They decided the pain should fall on the electorate instead. In 1995 they knew all the arguments about people living longer and that money paid out in state pensions would go up.
They could have changed the rules and informed the Government Actuary Department that they would deliberately build up a surplus in the fund – so it could pay out as people lived longer without changing the pension age.
Instead they chose the cheapest route – raise the pension age so they won’t have to subsidise the fund- but try and keep mum so the women wouldn’t realise what they were doing.
The villains are the late Lady Thatcher, John Moore, Kenneth Clarke, Sir John Major, Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Steve Webb and Guy Opperman. There are many others who stood by and did nothing. That is why 50s women have been left in this situation today.
No doubt the robbing government will hope all of us will die before reaching and enjoying our retirement it’s criminal what they have done although for the majority of us 50’s women have worked 46 years plus doesn’t seem to count for much…

Disgusting, I had paid full contributions by 2012, should have had my pension this May, and trying to get a job at 60 is almost impossible and do their wives have to work at 60+. All my plans are now ruined, and until age 55 I expected my pension at 60…..they don’t know the despair and upset this has caused!

Same as me,worked from 16 years old and paid in for 35 years, paid up in 2010 – due to retire in December, made redundant, can’t get a job at 59 years old. Now they tell me I won’t even get a full pension when I finally retire at 66.

I agree. I’m 61 and only found out on Facebook when I was 58 that I couldn’t retire at 60 but would have to work 6… yes 6 more years. I’d taken a low paid job in my 50’s as my health was failing, believing I could manage until 60. I’m now struggling to walk but I have no choice, my plans to relax and look after my health are in tatters. I dread waking up in the morning…as do more and more women.

So the government put the pensions regulator in place to ensure schemes are managed properly and receive contributions and yet they have squandered our money as though it was their own. Just a load of thieves and as its been so many years we can’t blame one party its all of them!

Plus we were legally paid less than men for doing the same work. I was paid £14 and week working at Hotpoint while the man next to me got £21. I was raised in poverty because my dad took ill when I was 7 and mum’s female wage then had to keep a family of six. Imagine if she’d had the same pay as a man. We would have been much better off. So we lose our pensions for 5 years or more after being paid unequally when we started work.

Hi I’m 64 and 2 months I was made redundant on 24th april2019 but didn’t get redundancy pay as I had been there less than 2years, having to go to universal credit has been terrible and the strain of looking for work has seen my health take a nosedive, I think I’ve succumbed to stress and haven’t kept my diabetes in check, went to a walk in centreyesterday (((because when I rang the doctors on the 19th June I was given a appointment for 9th July))).where the triage nurse asked what was wrong, long story short glucose in my urine and my blood sugars were in the high20s, as I live alone I could be in serious trouble. Had to see doctor today 20th my blood sugars at 21.4 which means it’s going in the right direction, also had to jump on the scales and I’ve lost 8kg , actually I’m pleased with that, I’ve been signed off for 4 weeks because I have to get it under control and keep stressing about a job will exasperate my situation. How many of the 1950s ladies are breaking down and becoming ill, not to mention the lovely ladies who’ve passed on. I’ve just found out about back to 60 and I’ve joined the group and now I’m a lot more clued up, the DWP are so arrogant, I just hope the high court judges find in our favour, DWP say it will cost the government £300 million to administer and take 20 years to pay out ,they’ve just given £600 million to a company that assess how ill Disability-oclaimants are, that was done on the quite as well.I would love to slap the snot out of the absolute arsehole that is IAN DUNCAN SMITH, to all 1950s ladies stay well and positive, because thanks to the amazing people who’ve took up the fight on our behalf, look how far they’ve come, regards to all SYLVIA 4/5/1955.

There is a solution, move somewhere like Canada and take your UK Pension which will be worth double there. So its a win win, you get your pension and the UK loses all its Retiree spending taxes. Its the best way to Screw the Government over for what they did to all those women.

The only issue with living in Canada (and other countries where there is no mutual agreement on pensions) is that your UK pension will never change even when those in the UK and other countries with an agreement get an increase. The slump in the pound since Brexit doesn’t help either . However I should not complain as it is worth it to live here!

Really, you are not very bright……did you know that by living in Canada your pension is not index linked – hence no rises . Also that you will be hit with Canadian Taxes on it?

Wait until the EU falls apart – the EU will take a big hit then, that is if Germany and other major EU countries haven’t gone back to their former currencies by then. The EU won’t like our exports being cheaper so the pound will get stronger again – just like magic!

Be careful!! There are a number of countries (Commonwealth) which include Canada, Australia South Africa and others where a UK pension will be frozen in the hands of the recipient at the amount first granted. Mike Uk pensioner living in South Africa

I have just returned from living in Canada for the past 12 years, it may seem ones pension is double but it goes no further as the prices are higher and you have to take into account the exchange rate and just to add to your woes your state pension will be frozen at the amount first paid to you when you arrive there. No annual indexing…..ever. So it’s worth less with each passing year. Across the border in the USA you will still get annual indexing each year. Read up on the frozen pension scandal, some countries are frozen some not. Another injustice perpetrated by the UK government and this one has been going on for decades.

You could move to Canada, and yes your money would be converted to Canadian dollars. If for instance you had £400 a month UK, it would at the moment amount to $680. However, that would be the amount, subject to conversion rates, for the rest of your life in Canada. The UK government refuse to give annual increases to mainly Commonweath residing UK pensioners!!!

Sorry; your British Pension, if you move to Canada, is set at the amount it was on the day you left the UK; it will never be topped up as folk who retire to some other places get it. If you move to the USA you get the annual Increases though! My late mother used to commute between the UK and Canada; where her permanent home was in retirement; she had no blood relatives left in the UK; her grandchildren and me; her daughter, had already come to Canada. But she had an old friend of her late mother’s that she felt duty bound to care for as best she could, so since he paid her fare she would spend 3 months or so in the UK twice a year keeping him company and generally treating him as the “”Uncle”” he had always been to her since early childhood. While in the UK her pension was topped up to the amount of the day, but on returning to Canada; back down it went. My mother had worked from a week after her 15th birthday; as the child of a widow from the 1918 Influenza Epidemic the allowance for her stopped the day she turned 15. My father dropped dead aged 60, leaving her to shift gears from being simply another Shop Assistant in his business and providing secretarial support in her “spare time” to running it totally; not only continuing to serve customers but doing the ordering, the books, the taxes and all. As for me; I have NO BRITISH PENSION despite having worked in my father’s business from age 16, then later working full time as a Teacher and paying into a superannuation scheme. All because the rules were changed. Thank goodness Canada gives me a basic pension then tops it up since I have no other income and thus qualify for a Supplement to bring me up to a poverty level income.

Only your pension will be frozen and will not receive any Cost-of-Living adjustments. That was because Harold Wilson was strapped for cash, so he froze all out of country recipients out of their annual upratings. Don’t go to a Commonwealth state but go to an EU member country, or the US, where pension freezing does not apply!

We shouldnt be running away to Canada or anywhere else, this is our country, we should carry on fighting and fight together- not in seperate groups- to get our proper pensions and compensation. I am in WASPI. We have been fighting since 2015 and am waiting for the result on Tuesday15th of the Appeal that Back to 60 have fought for. if that looks anything like a positive result, or even if it doesnt we should stop pussy-footing around, all groups of women join together and take the legal route- but we have no money to do this- we could try Unions like GMB or Unison, because then it would be free. WE CANT JUST DO NOTHING AND SIT HERE MOANING TILL WE CROAK…..which is exactly what they want. I dont want any payout postumously when in future years some spotty faced solicitor decides to pick this injustice up and maybe even wins, I want to fight now, while I still have breath to do so. Contact WASPI-google it today, now, dont wait.

It is so easy to steal from women, they are used to be second class anyway, they don’t matter, they don’t need the money as they have a husband to look after them, if not they can just stop eating for six years. I had made my plans and my pension forecast said I was to retire in 2014 and then someone said “I’ve heard it’s been changed” News to me!!! So I have managed on my savings. Like so many others. And then it changed again and postponed my date by another year and a half . Not fair!!!

Where is the proof that we are all living longer when there are so many deaths through cancer, motor neurone disease. etc. I am paid £64.50 per week to cover my caring efforts!!! What would it cost for me to still be working and have someone come in and ‘CARE’ for my husband. I also was a Carer for my mum till she passed away 9 years ago. What the hell is going on for us women who take on the ‘BURDEN’ of being Carers because it usually falls on the woman to take on the caring role. Hi Jan
I was born in 1954, have worked since leaving school at seventeen and according to my pension forecast will not get the full pension which I can’t understand why. I took voluntary redundancy three years ago as had I not, I most likely would have been made redundant due to a reorganisation in my then workplace. I have had two periods of six months work since through an agency but have now been unemployed since October 2017 and have applied for numerous jobs since to no avail – I am sure that this is due to my age, now 64+. I have received job seekers allowance which was paid for about 6 months and am now just signing for national insurance credits as I have been told that I have to continue to pay national insurance to reach my maximum pension of £155.72 until the end of April 2019!!!! I can’t understand this when I have already 49 qualifying years. My girlfriend is 4 years younger than me and was made redundant, she will get her state pension in 2023 and has been forecast to receive £175 per week. I can’t understand how there is such a difference in our forecasts. Also, she does not need to pay any more contributions. I did ring the Pension Advisory Service and asked them to explain but I am none the wiser though I think it is to do with being contracted out. My friend’s COPE is £47 and mine is £49 so there is not a lot of difference there but there is a difference of £90+ on the monthly forecasts!

Its not only the way they brought this in (should have been more phased) we lose all other benefits.. bus pass etc. I worked from age of 16 and no company offered me a private pension, then we were dumped on and pension age went up leaving no time to put another plan in place! I worked until 62 (the job wanted me out after age of 60 and bullied me out) so I now have no job, no pension. I do have a husband who worked 2 days a week and has now been given 5 days a week (thanks god) but travels 3 hours each day just to pay the bills it costs over £300.00 a month in petrol, long hours, some unpaid at times (needs to be done to keep a job) We should be compensated and things put right…. We are also blocking jobs for the young. The government say unemployment has gone down but its because they have kept the kids in school until 18 when they come out in a few years there will be even less jobs. Some people are happy and physically fit to continue until 66 but give them the choice. Its all unfair and badly planned!!!

It seems that if you don`t work, won`t work, want to sponge off our tax money, you can live like lords, especially if you live in a council house. I know of somebody on benefits who go abroad each year, have a car, and copies her sister when she has something new in the house. Likewise, if you come here from foreign countries, and are not able to work, there`s a house, phone, car, and food on the table ready and waiting for them. Those of us that have worked all our lives have to get by on a government pension that doesn`t even cover the basics. I was born in 1949 and fortunate enough to have collected my pension from the age of sixty, and I`m so sorry for those who have to work until they drop. The system needs to be reformed, and a fairer system put into place. Unemployment benefit to those who genuinely cannot get work, but regardless of what the job is, even if you are a teacher who cannot find work, should be made to do anything on offer, until the government gives them help to find what it is they are qualified to do.

So true Clive 3.8million women with the support of there family and friends I don’t think these political parties realise we voted them in and we can vote them out, there is strength in numbers. The DWP are so arrogant, they really believed they would win at the high courts, at that stage they lost, now there on the backfoot that’s why there trying to get people against the 1950s ladies and their cause using extortionate claims about how much it would cost to pay us our pensions, that we’ve payed in, if we’ve paid in and they haven’t paid out then where the hell has that money gone. Somebody’s misappropriated the funds, they claim that if they have to payback then it will cost £300 million to administer it, worse than that the filthy lowlifes are saying it will take 20 years to bring it to its conclusion, many are ill and becoming ill and so many have passed away, plus the suicides( saddest thing of all). If we owed the DWP money they would hound you for it back, people need to get involved and sign the backto60 petition, we all need to stand up and stand together and show these robbers that we mean business. There is also another group called WASPI, and some amazing people who are doing amazing work for the 1950s women , I do hope your health has improved and maybe just maybe your wife will get recompense and you can have some fun spending a few pounds on yourselves, I wish you both well regards Sylvia 4/5/1955.

And to add insult to injury, for mixed age couples, the entitlement to Pension Credit (around half of pensioners are eligible to claim this) will be based on the age of the YOUNGER partner (usually the woman) after 19 May 2019 this year. Previously it was the age the older partner that determined Pension Credit entitlement., Which means that pensioner “mixed age” couples who were regarded as a unit claiming State Pension with the top up addition of Pension Credit will revert to Universal Credit in cases where the younger partner has not reached State Pension qualifying age, Exactly the 50s women who were short changed/frauded on their entitlement to State Pension at age 60, by up to 6 plus years at a ridiculously short notice period. And governments of all colours have always encouraged us to PLAN for retirement years ahead !!???
I hope the Judicial Review on 5/6 June 2019 come to only one decision – to revert those women effected, back to 60 as their retirement age rather than a “compensatory payment”. The expensive administrative complexity of doing that will caution any government in the future from insulting “pensioners-to-be” citizens who were made promises throughout all their working years.

Born in 1956. Sex discrimination throughout my life. Life belt of retirement at 60 taken away by those who prospered under the patriarchal system. Cynical delays to reconsidering the delayed pensions. Waiting for us all to get to 66 so they can say there’s nothing to reconsider. My MP has not signed. When I asked Gawke to support us, he said it was a question of equality. With such dunderheads in power what chances have we.

There seems to be a theme here in this country of allowing pensions to be stolen. Robert Maxwell and Philip Green as well as the government. And this all sounds familiar to the Sheriff of Nottingham in the Robin Hood legend dating back to 13/14th century AD. So nothing has changed.
If we get ill in our final years, in particular suffer with dementia they takes our homes.

It is hard to believe that just a handful of inhuman humans have caused such trauma to so many millions, but…sadly, it has always been thus. It’s been thus because we, the 99% have ALLOWED it to be so, for centuries. The internet’s exposing them all…and for the first time we are being made aware of their ruthlessness and pure evii. THANK YOU for exposing them, yet again, David…and here’s to a Whole New World being created where every govt has to obey The People and not the other way around. They all need to take an Oath Of Office, staring with ‘First, do NO harm to The People’….and those who DO harm can then be removed instantly, BY The People. Together, we are so, SO strong and it is only in recent times that we have started to realize that. To quote Richie Havens “They Can’t Hide Us Anymore”…and neither can ‘they’ hide FROM us either. Paying national insurance towards your state pension in theory is similar to paying for a private pension. If this were the case people would be suing them for miss selling ,Isn’t this just what it is because we’re told 60 age of retirement when our children were young no child care like there is today. It was us that it fell on to cover childcare plus we paid the married woman’s contribution which was less but we were advised to do this. How could this be equality. Yes now women pay same as men. Women can work full time with help with childcare so it’s understandable equal rights but wasn’t for women born in 50s. Totally unfair, the government should be ashamed of themselves. They just cook the books and used this to save money. What happened to legal rights?

I think that this Government are trying to gradually get rid of the welfare system altogether.
I know they are selling off the NHS little by little.
All this they have no money is crap, they can do d money when it suits them.
I actually they think we are perasites grrr.
A lot of them are not from the real world, they don’t know what it’s like to struggle day to trying to make ends meet.
And this Universal Credit is just typical of there absolute cruelty.
They treat the people of this country as the enemy, they are supposed to help their people not make their lives a misery.
Their main objective is privatisation , that is what they stand for.
Anyway back to the pension issue
I was born in 1956, I left school at 15 to start work full time.
I have always done care work which when I was younger didn’t include much health and safety.
In 2016 I had surgery on my spine due to two herniated discs compressing my spinal cord.
I was forced to go back to work before I really should have as I only got £72.00 to live on to pay my bills and buy food.
This was ESA. I came off work again last September due to further herniated discs in my spine and neck.
I have been treated like a criminal because I have applied for Universal Credit
I received a letter in June 2013 telling me my pension would be 65 raising to 66 by 2020.
I don’t think that is plenty of notice.
I am struggling with my health and struggling to pay my bills after working for 47 years.
I feel like I am being punished for still being alive and may live to draw my pension.
I think the pension age should be 60 because a lot of people that age can’t do the jobs they use to do.
Eyesight gets worse, you feel more tierd and most people I know have some form of arthritis. I know there are exceptions to the rule.
They say people arriving longer but I don’t feel a lot have them have proper quility of life.
Surely peoeople should be able to enjoy some years of retirement before their bodies or minds fail them
Always their are some individuals who have good health into old age but I don’t know any.
Sorry for the rant but I was on a roll.
And what about the billions of unclaimed pensions , those people javent had anything out of their pension pots.

It’s an absolute disgrace.
We won’t go away, we want what we paid in for, working from the age of 15 years old , and having to work still now, many in I’ll health, and tired !
WE WILL GET JUSTICE. !!!!!.

As well as having defrauded women of their pensions Another nasty decision has been taken by a number of firms and this is it.Having worked for a number of years sometimes decades a woman now in 60s, is, due to age, unable to continue producing what they had years earlier, you would expect some sympathy from the company considering their long service.Nothing could be further from the truth, if the worker is unable to carry on then they will be sacked, being unable to work like a slave any more. No redudancy just job seekers. At 60 plus. Caring government we have. We are all right jack.Chris FaganPs Maybe someone should start compiling a list of companies having this policy

Perhaps now we know that they purposely and systematically robbed everyone of their pensions to protect their own, now would be a good time to remove the generous pensions they all receive and leave them with the same as everyone else…..at the same age. To say I am disgusted that ministers, who are voted in by people of this country to protect our lives and our rights, could rob from the fund we all have no choice but to pay into, doesn’t even scratch the surface. The people who made these changes and have since fobbed us off should now be made to leave their seats and forego the pensions they robbed us to obtain.

I think people are wakening up to British governments, so here are a few more facts on pensions.
Here are the words of a person who worked in the treasury. ” Back in 2000, I worked at the Treasury on the Myners Review of Institutional Investment and discovered that the so-called Minimum Funding Requirement for UK defined benefit pension funds was not working properly. Firstly, the Government had itself assured pension scheme members that their pensions were completely safe and protected by law. The reality was that the MFR did not ensure there was enough money in UK pension schemes to pay all members’ pensions”.
Article 8 of the EU Insolvency Directive requires member states to properly protect workers’ pensions. Britain had said the MFR would do this, but that was not true. source Money Marketing Ros Altmann 2016.
This leaves us with a problem, we send people to represent us and make decisions on our behalf, I accept that. But surely they have no right to tell us down right lies, and take our pensions and make laws that guarantee the pensions of directors. Can we really trust our MP’s to act on behalf of the people/pensioners, sadly I am afraid not.

This is nonsense and you know it. If anyone is owed that money, it is those who were pensioners in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. Their pensions did not keep up with earnings. Many of them spent their final years in poverty. How DARE you suggest that that money should have been saved for 1950s women, and even for the rest of us. It should have been given to those pensioners. The triple lock at least attempts to restore what they have lost – if they are alive long enough to receive it. But for those who have died, or who will die before their pensions catch up, that money will never be returned. I have told you all this already, and yet you repeat it again in this post. You are a despicable excuse for a journalist.

….says the woman who stated just a few days back that “Govt is made up of liars and cheats.”
Odd that govt goes to financial/private pensions sector for advice on State Pension, eh? And pray, are you not PART of the financial/private pensions sector, Frances?
The UK State Pension has been DELIBERATELY created (by your ‘profession’, surely?) to be AS complicated as possible, so that only the Financial Crooksk within it know how it works…and even some of those now struggle, SO complicated and crooked has it become.
Yes, it’s appalling that State Pensions do NOT remain the same for all of us, throughout our last years, regardless of when we were born…and it’s a crime that many older people are still struggling on the even greater PITTANCE they were given as their State Pension.
Oddly, you are perfectly CONTENT though, to see generations of women left without ANY STATE PENSIONS at all for 6/7 YEARS, because, going back to the conversation you were having where you stated govt made up of liars and cheats, on Twitter….because, EVERY GOVT since 1995 “DEFAULTED on their bond”, that ‘bond’ being their WORD, as in, for those not aware, “My word is my bond.”
THEIR bond was that WE would have our State Pensions AT 60, same for every other woman given 60 as her State Pension age.
Govt, made up of Liars & Cheats, as you say, has DEFAULTED on their BOND, Frances, as WELL YOU KNOW.
You, madam, are a despicable excuse, even for a hypocrite, for no other hypocrite, save for those in government, has appalled me to the depths you have these past few years….

The extra money in the fund, if contributions had been kept-up, would have gone to pensioners at that time……and you forget that the money going into the fund is money being taken from people, thereby reducing economic activity. There are no winners here, just varying degrees of losers. The state pension is kept low so that those needing more (because of no savings/no extra pension) can claim means-tested benefits. A higher state pension basic would benefit those whose income is such that they regard the state pension as “pocket money”. So nothing much is going to change. And WASPI, at best, can only ever expect a means-tested solution. Whichever party is in power.

I have written, attended meetings, marched, met with my MP, gone to two Parliaments but found “no one who cares” about us who has been able to make a difference. Those in power had their needs met by robbing us of our money, self-respect, dignity, security and happiness – there surely has to be criminal or civil law which can be relied on to address the all round contempt which we women have been treated with by the various Governments which colluded to back-foot us. Given that all Prime Ministers regularly meet with the Queen I do wonder if she was aware of the situation or maybe they hid their financial deviance from her too?

So what should we do now this scandal has been exposed
Are government pensions safe anymore
How will this affect future generations
Is there any point of paying money into a government pension when we cant trust them to deliver
Will successive governments just keep extending the pension age for both sexes
Maybe pension policy should be managed as a cross party issue and not left to the government of the day
The tory governments austerity policies have been used as an excuse to wipe out the welfare state
If we dont have enough money to live then we dont have money to buy and the government cant tax what we dont have
Its a downward spiral.and wont work

I was born March 1954. The date for my pension has been changed four times that I have heard of (never received any letters), for us ‘lucky’ few, born between January and April 1954. I am now 64 and still working, but should have retired four years ago. By my calculations, with 40 years paid into the system, (and that was by 2009) I will have lost over £28,000 by the time I actually get my pension, calculating on £100 per week. Doesn’t sound a lot to others but it means a lot to me!

By raising the pensionable age of women from 60 to 65, the government has deprived me of five years of pension to which I was entitled. At a very conservative estimate of say £100 per week multiplied by260 weeks, Ihave lost over £26,000.This is aggrevated by my giving my time to be an unpaid volunteer at my local library, archive point andpark.Itmakes one wonder what the money that I have saved the govetnment (or of which I have been robbed) has actually funded something.

I am 61 years old still working 30 hours a week and one full day caring for my grandchildren so their mums can work and I still 5 years to work on minimum paye of £7.80. Meantime they have huge private pensions paid from their huge salaries paid by us and can retire at an average age of 55. It’s not a benefit, it’s an investment via tax in to a pension plan & perhaps if the gov cannot manage it correctly or be trusted then it should be taken away from them, taxes should be lowered so people & employers can use their extra cash to invest into a private pension plan and manage it by themselves, at least then individuals will not be having the rug pulled from under them.

I’m struggling to follow the logic in David’s article. The Lynes article it references makes a deal about the National Insurance Fund surplus at the time, and potentially using this to pay benefits. However, the principle is that the fund builds up a surplus during periods of economic growth, as during the recession cycle payments will exceed receipts and the fund will reduce. This was borne true by the recession that followed shortly after the Lynes article, where the surplus was significantly reduced and has had to be topped up by treasury grants. If it had been spent as Lynes suggests this would have placed a greater burden on taxpayers at a time when this really wasn’t needed.
David then links this to the present day, and arbitrarily ringfences 1950s women as the “victims” of the abolition of the treasury supplement in 1981. It’s a leap that isn’t substantiated in the article, and it isn’t clear what should happen now? Should we seek to recover (plus interest) the tax payments foregone by individuals and companies since 1981? Is David arguing that state pension ages should remain fixed at 65 for men and 60 for women?

Surely to Change the retirement age for women with little warning is some form of breach of contract. It has caused me financial hardship because I retired owing to ill health at 55yrs because I thought I’d get my pension. Originally the deal was we all pay money in towards our pensions to access at 60y so how could they just change it suddenly? Although some might live longer there will always be a ceiling on longevity …there are not many living beyond 90y and many die before like my husband who died at 62yrs who paid into it all his working life. What happened to his contributions? It’s true politicians are only good at feathering their own nests. It ought to be challenged in the courts….cant believe they have got away with it. It’s bad enough for our generation but for our kids they will increase the age to get your pension hoping folks will drop dead at their desks.
Also while we oldies are sitting taking jobs the younger generation who are enthusiastic and full of energy will be waiting for someone to die to get a job. …dead men’s shoes. There will be high unemployment of the young and so the government will end up paying out benefits instead of pensions because there are only so many jobs.

The Government should have been up front and let the public know what was happening to our pensions so we could have been more prepared for the £48,000 or so that I am now missing out on due to the government moving the goal posts and making me work longer before I see a penny of my pension, if God spares me that is! David, the government doesn’t need a ‘fund’ of taxpayers sterling to pay for pensions, it simply keystrokes the money into existence. That’s how a modern monetary economy works – we don’t need tax or NI surpluses to ‘fund’ anything. The government can, and does, create money out of thin air, we can never run out of money to pay for anything – ever. We can run out of real resources and labour – and that is where a government has to be careful not to induce inflation. As noted previously though, the people who have lost are those in the 80’s/90’s etc whose pensions weren’t rising in accordance with earnings. The ability to increase pensions or reduce the retirement age now is a political choice, it’s not and never will be a shortage of money.

Yes, born in 1956 and working full time from age 16, paying full national insurance towards my state pension at 60. That’s what I was led to believe anyway. Not true though because the pension age was changed by Government! The other joke is that my NHS Superannuation pension is being held until I can retire. I have worked in the NHS paying into my pension for 42 years come September and should have been able to go at 40years service. There is no financial benefit for me working more than 40 years but hey . . .the thieving government have said I can’t get my state pension yet and I’m still paying off my mortgage. And working full time. With any luck I might get to retire in another 3 years maybe. Thanks for nothing by the way!

It’s our money at the end of the day paid in from working hard. I was looking forward to my retirement at 60 but now it’s 67 that’s if I make it. So all of MY money just melts into government funds. Its theft. Its fraud. Its lies. Simple. Those responsible are criminals. This is not a benefit. This is MY savings. I had no choice whether to save with the government or elsewhere. I worked from the age of 15. Never ever claimed a ‘benefit’ in my entire life. I had a contract with the government with every payment I made that I would receive my pension from age 60. I got my first letter to say I would not get my pension until I was 62, just 3 years before I turned 60. A year later another came, informing me I would not now get it until I was 63. The year before I was 60, another letter informed me I would have to wait till I was 66! Apparently, we are living too long. I was sadly invited to attend 4 funerals last year. Only one of them was for someone older than me. The rest had never lived long enough to collect their pensions. So where is their money? These politicians are criminals. They have robbed me of approximately £36,000. Why are they not being arrested, tried and sentenced??? They think they are untouchable. I think they are about to find out they are wrong.

I was 62.8 years old before I could retire. I struggled to work in a stressful job to get to 62.8. Bad health and a genetic disorder meant i didn’t quite make it. I have just been in bad health since. I know lots of women struggling to work in there 60,s that should be retired enjoying some retirement.

When you reach your State Pension Age, DWP still drag their feet. Having been affected by both the 1995 and 2011 Pension Acts, I finally reached my SPA in July, having replied online to their invitation letter to apply for my State Pension. Didn’t hear anything, called them twice, but for whatever reason couldn’t pass their security, they sent someone out to my home to confirm my identity, then received an email to call them as they required further information – guess what – I couldn’t pass security! One question they asked was the mobile number I had over thirteen years ago!! So the frustrating situation I am in is that they want me to contact them, I want to contact them, yet I am prevented from doing so because I can’t pass their security questions, so how on earth I am supposed to make contact with them – crazy!
So having waited until I am almost 65 to get my pension, and my first payment due next week, I am no nearer getting it than I was a few years ago. It appears to me that they make life as difficult as they can for you, and even when you finally reach your SPA, don’t count on getting it.

We all feel that successive governments have acted unethically, even fraudulently. I am furious to have been cheated out of 6 years of pension, and will continue to struggle financially until Sept 2019. However, what is really eating me up is the feeling that I can do NOTHING about it. Signing petitions gets us nowhere; lobbying MPs to argue on our behalf gets us nowhere; media coverage highlighting this injustice gets us nowhere. The feeling of impotence is even more harmful to me than my fury at what they have done to us.

God willing I will still stand up against the government. For my son and my daughter, grandchildren’s futures. They will not be allowed to destroy our lives. We must go on fighting for our right to our pension. Which we have paid in to all our working life. Not work to pay our pension for until 66yrs or 67yrs, it just keeps going on and on. It has become very evident over recent years that people don’t stand for election to serve the people but to serve themselves . First we have them claiming ridiculous expenses then we find they allowed this to happen deliberately to our pension fund meanwhile ensuring their pension is safe as we have to pay it . Born in 1954 the government has moved the goal post twice initially I should have retired at 60 now they tell me I must work until 2021 in order to claim my pension which they now call a benefit . As a nurse caring for elderly people I currently have to look after patient only a few years older than myself . Nursing is a hard job how when we were told all those years ago that we must constantly lift heavy patient causing untold damage to our bodies do they expect us to work eventually until we are 71!!!! Trust me I am struggling now . Yes people are living longer but the illness and disease are still prevelant today we still get arthritis people are still having strokes I can only assume they want us to die before we retire . Surely the robbing of pension funds is illegal. I have worked since I was 16 years of age. I have paid my contributions to that pension fund. Has anyone actually explained where the money went to? Basic pension I am entitled to – since they “amended” the weekly amount, sorry that should say “lowered”, is £156. That’s multiplied by 52 and then by 6 equals the grand sum off – £48,672. To date the government have withheld £12,792 approximately of my hard earned contributions. I think they have committed an illegal act. Heads of privately run corporations were liable to prosecutions were they not? Somebody should be held accountable. Simple.

I have contributed to the economy of this country by working Full Time for 45 years. This year, my 60th I should have been able to retire gratefully. But no, due to the increase in pension age I will need to work until at least age 66. Robbed and disappointed. Politicians are all corrupt and just look after their own interests. Thieves! That’s what they all are.

My friends of 66 / 67 now are enjoying golf and ladies who lunch and voluntary work. I will be too old to enjoy it by the time I get there. If only someone had the wealth and the knowledge to take the government to task over this, cases where won when it was discovered that endowment policies were mis sold, through the same reasons, i.e not enough money in the kitty due to bad investments etc surely the people have been mis sold a pension , paying into national insurance will guarantee you a pension of x amount when you reach 60yrs for women and 65yrs for men. It’s blatant lies.

Also, not only have women been robbed of their pension, having to work longer, when for most of their lives they’ve planned for 60, but also the government, hoping that most won’t make it to 66/67 years of age, will make on these pensions. If you die, before you reach pension age, they will rob your pensions, (which has been paid into from your wages, for most of your lives) but the government will only pay a small amount to a husband/partner. Surely this money which they have paid in, should be included in any estate that is left in your Will – not put back into the treasury!! Maybe I’m wrong – but if bank were made to pay back mis-sold PPI, surely the government should be made to pay back, what doesn’t belong to them!

I think its totally immoral of any government to do this to working class poor.because that’s what we are going to be poor.having worked frim the age of 15 paid my tax and national insurance brought up my children while still working I might add.they also contribute tax and national insurance so why should we have to live our lives out on the breadline .prices for everything has gone up so the little pension we will get wont go very far.we won’t even get any extra for the six years more that we have to work still putting our money into the system.i was less than a year from retirement when this was forced on me like many others .we had no say in the matter.the government are hoping we die before it has to be paid out.its unforgivable..

Sorry, but I’ve seen this posted a few times on Facebook and it is seriously wrong. Some of this is courtesy of Paul Lewis’s Money Marketing.
Let’s bust some myths.
There is no pension fund, it’s a myth The notion that NI contributions pay for your pension or that there is a pot labelled “state pension” in the Bank of England is not real. Taxes have not been earmarked for anything since the Gladstone reform. All tax take goes into the Consolidated Fund. NI itself is not a fund and it is not insurance, though a fiction is carefully woven around it to make it appear as if it is both.
The “fund” makes contribution rules, which link paying enough NICs to getting a full state pension, confuse the public into thinking that, somehow, the money in the fund is theirs – saved up to pay for their state pension. But the fund does not exist except outside a set of accounts.
Myth 1: The fund is used to pay benefits. No. The money used to pay benefits comes from the Consolidated Fund. This is one of the government’s account at the BoE. It gets topped up from the National Loan Fund.
Myth 2: I’ve paid for my state pension: No you have not. People believe that, because they have paid their NICs, they have somehow paid for their state pension. That confusion is caused because each year of contributions counts as a “ticket” towards your pension. You need 35 years of tickets to get a full pension and at least 10 years to get any pension at all at the reduced rate of 10/35ths. Fewer than 10 years and you get nothing.
But that system is no more than an assessment of entitlement. Even when 35 years have been paid, most people work another 10 years and still pay NICs right up to state pension age.
The fund deceives people into thinking there are certain benefits that are good – because they have somehow been paid for by the recipients – and other benefits which are bad – because they are a burden on taxpayers. It is all nonsense.
Myth 3. Taxpayers fund government spending. No, and this has been the case since 1971 when the U.K. came off the gold standard and the £ became a fiat currency. This means there is no quantity of a commodity (gold) that limits the amount of money the government as access to. The U.K. govt can create as much money as it needs. If it chooses to pay a decent state pension it can do. There is no fiscal constraint.

I received nothing in writing advising me my pension age changed. When I was 59 I called to request a pension forecast and was told if I retired in 2015 I would need to have paid 30 years national insurance contributions to receive a full pension, however, if I retired in 2016 I would need to have paid 35 years national insurance contributions to receive a full state pension. I asked how many years contributions I had accrued and was told 43 but I could not get a state pension until I was 66 at which point I will ( if I live until then) have paid 49 years contributions. I asked if I could stop paying Contributions now and was told no. I asked how much my pension would be increased by due to paying 14 years more contributions than required and was told no increase. One would have thought with the totally inflated salaries earned by government ministers and high level employees that they would have managed to employ someone who could actually balance the books.
I feel cheated and disgusted at the way the government has abused the women born in the fifties.
When a defined benefit pension scheme goes bust The Pension Protection Fund helps in some cases by taking over the company assets in the scheme ( read the conditions) and in many cases pensioners will receive the same amount of pension they were due prior to the company going bust. It appears to me if the government are incapable of basic maths and investment strategy they should be looking for a similar group to manage them properly rather than making the women of the fifties pay the price for their arrogance and indifference. This is essentially theft – stealing circa £42,000 from each of these women. The ministers who mismanaged the state pension scheme should be made to pay back funds ( like the proceeds of crime act ). I am disenchanted with the people in government who are running this country into the ground.

Now i understand that at age 31 this doesnt pose as much a problem as it does for others on here but, i dont understand why if the government are screwing us over the way they are why do we still pay them with OUR taxes to do it. (Poo i.e but) if a shop ever treated u like that ud never use or give them money again but thegov cn keep bending u over n u all keep paying for the privilege. Ever since Thatcher smashed the unions you have all seemed to of forgotten what people power actually is n how the gov is ment to SERVE us not rule us. Please seriously some one answer my this question, if everyone and their families effected by this refused to pay any tax untill the gov listened n remembers they are public servants n not master, really even if just 1 million people was to do this what could they do?? Remember guys we are the ones with true power because WE are the ones bringing the money to the table, we the people are ment to be the masters of this country n we the people are ment to be the ones who profit from our hard work n of u dont u get rid n put a new gov in that will serve the people, that is the way democracy is ment to work. But in my short years i cant say ive witnessed much democracy in our so called “Democratic” state. N a little off point but concerning the 50s generation, didnt millions of ur perants generation die in war to stop this kind of careless authoritarian type of system being forced upon us it just makes no sence to me.

I worked from 15 years old and could not retire until nearly 63 to claim my pension. They probably hoped we would die before we received our pension. It makes me so angry when I see people who have never worked and who are better off for not working.

Not only was the pension age increased to 65, then 66, but in April 2016, the government raised the number of required ‘qualifying years’ (the number of years you have to pay in to get a full pension) from 30 to 35, and any years that you paid into a works pension were disqualified from the ‘qualifying years’ so, having worked for 45 years, retiring at 60 in 2015, at the time I retired, I had 34 ‘qualifying years’, plenty enough for my pension, the year after I retired, they upped the period to 35, meaning I will have to accept a reduced pension when I get it at 66, I will therefore lose not only 6 years of pension, but also £30 per week for the rest of my life due to the government moving the goalposts several times over.

During my early days of employment there was no equal pay n women were workin for lower wages than most men and also normally the main parent dealing with the school run and holidays and after school parenting . We were in no position to put money on s pension scheme n so have been left high n dry in our sixties . Many men can still retire at 60 as they have paid into a scheme all their workin life as was the norm then unlike many women born in the same era who have to continue working
Hope there can be a successful outcome to this matter where these women are treated fairly . That is all we ask .

Why do politicians and governments repeatedly pick on the most disadvantaged in society, because they can, they’re like hyena’s picking off the weakest in society?
I too am affected, born in 1956. I had a paper round from thirteen and started full-time work the day after my fifteenth birthday. I had no children and worked solidly (for ten years I did two jobs) until ill health, rheumatoid arthritis forced me to accept early retirement at the age of 55. During that time I paid tax and full NI contributions constantly. My husband died two years after I finished work aged 54 years old. I received no physical help in nursing him, and I lost his financial contribution. I am now 62 years old, and managed to get part time work in a local supermarket to supplement my small private pension. Most employers are not interested in older workers, especially if you have a disability. I felt I was treated like a criminal when I tried to claim Disability Benefits and declared fit for work even though I later had to have a wrist replacement 3 years later and my knuckles are now badly affected. I am physically exhausted and worry that I still have to work another four years before I can receive my state pension and am very angry at the way we have been treated by politicians, especially thise who claim to help the disadvantaged in society.
